Welcome to SomerBits - assorted bits of history, conservatism, software-related
information, hints, tips, trivia, files, and whatever else comes to
mind.
Developer.com
- resources for programmers. A part of the larger
Earthweb
collection of IT resources.
Netcraft
- Lots of news, information, and resources about many
aspects of the Internet. PC Magazine judged it one of the
Top-101 web sites of 2003 (in the Computing Experts section).
Notepad++
multi-file editor with many programmer-related features (including
color syntax highlighting for many file types, show whitespace/control
characters, find/replace including control characters and regular
expressions, auto indent/reformat for some file types, macro feature,
much more) by Don Ho and the Notepad++ team (open source). Has become my
favorite text editor (and is the favorite of many programmers I know).
NoteTab Light
multi-file editor with killer macro tools and multi-file
search-and-replace
(great for HTML) by Eric G.V. Fookes, Switzerland.
EditPad Lite
PostcardWare, fast,
multi-file editor by Jan Goyvaerts, Belgium.
Programmer's
File Editor
powerful, multi-file, rules-customizable-by-language, VERY LARGE FILE (up to about 1.5 gigabyte)
text editor by Alan Phillips,
Lancaster University, England. Development is discontinued, but it's
still available here.
Large Text File Viewer 5.2 from SwiftGear.com fast
VERY LARGE FILE viewer (not an editor).
Now my large text file viewer of choice. I have used it to view files as
large as 13 gigabytes (!) with no signs of running out of gas. Links are
half-way down the left side of his home page.
Swiftgear's site seems to be down (2011/10/31) so here's the
installer
for the latest version (5.2).
A 32-bit Windows program I wrote to use the :CueCat scanner (still
available from some electronic surplus dealers
and on ebay) as a general-purpose bar code scanner and
symbology-identifying tool. It requires an
un-modified scanner and will not work with one which has
been modified (hardware hacked) to display data
un-encrypted. The hardware modifications remove the scanner's ability
to return a code indicating which bar code
symbology was scanned, which is an essential part of the
functionality of this program.
I believe it to be the most comprehensive of such programs with
regard to usefulness as a general-purpose
bar code scanner. It identifies (and in many cases formats for
readability) 26 different bar code symbologies and variations,
including all UPC/EAN/JAN supplemental bar codes. This is Version
1.1.22 (2009/06/10) and is placed in the Public Domain.
See the readme.txt file
for detailed information and
a complete list of the bar code symbologies decoded.
Get the program and
VB6 project source files.
